Fortescue has recently awarded A$123,000 in Innovation Grants to seven community projects across the Pilbara region. These grants are designed to inspire local communities to develop and implement innovative and sustainable initiatives that provide long-term benefits.

The funded projects encompass a diverse range of initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship. For instance, the Julyardi Aboriginal Corporation received support for the Mayaka project, which focuses on educating the community about traditional bush medicine and food through the establishment of a dedicated garden. Similarly, the Punmu Aboriginal Corporation was granted funds to install solar power systems for existing water bores, reducing reliance on diesel generators in their remote community.

Other notable projects include Marine Rescue Onslow’s plan to enhance safety and energy efficiency by installing solar-powered lighting in a car park adjacent to the Onslow Emergency Services building, and the Tom Price Community Garden Inc.’s initiative to improve accessibility and resource efficiency through the installation of an efficient irrigation system, enhanced lighting, and pathways.

Fortescue’s Director of Approvals, Communities, and Environment, Warren Fish, emphasized the company’s commitment to empowering community organisations to achieve sustainable solutions. He stated, “We’re looking for a range of ideas that reflect the resilience and resourcefulness of the Pilbara. These grants are about empowering community organisations to achieve sustainable solutions that positively impact both their communities and the planet.”

The Fortescue Innovation Grants program is open to not-for-profit, sporting, recreation, and community organisations within the Town of Port Hedland, City of Karratha, Shire of Ashburton, and Shire of East Pilbara. Eligible projects are encouraged to focus on environmental and sustainable innovations, education and development for a sustainable future, and the adoption of green technologies and renewable energy initiatives.

By supporting these projects, Fortescue aims to foster a culture of innovation and sustainability within the Pilbara region, ensuring that community-led initiatives can thrive and contribute to the long-term well-being of the area.
