Microplastic in the air we breathe and benefits of air purifiers

Microplastics are small plastic particles that are less than 5mm in size and have been found to be present in the environment, including in the air we breathe. These particles come from a variety of sources, including the breakdown of larger plastic items, microbeads used in personal care products, and the wear and tear of synthetic clothing fibres.

The presence of microplastics in the air has raised concerns about their potential impact on human health. Microplastics can contain toxic chemicals and other contaminants that can be harmful if inhaled. Some studies have suggested that microplastics can cause inflammation in the lungs, as well as damage to the respiratory and immune systems.

The exact sources and pathways of microplastics in the air are still not well understood. However, research has shown that wind and air currents can transport microplastics over long distances, potentially spreading them to remote areas. Additionally, some studies have found high levels of microplastics in indoor air, suggesting that the air we breathe in our homes and workplaces may also be contaminated.

Benfits of an Air purifier
We recommend portable air purifiers which are usually energy efficient and are low consumption. Home and office air purifiers offer great benefits, as not only can they remove microplastic in the home, they offer many other benefits:

  • Improved indoor air quality: Air purifiers can effectively remove harmful particles such as dust, pollen, mould spores, pet dander, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air, leading to improved indoor air quality.
  • Relief from allergies and asthma symptoms: For people who suffer from allergies or asthma, an air purifier can help to remove allergens from the air, providing relief from symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.
  • Reduction of second-hand smoke: Air purifiers can effectively remove the harmful particles in second-hand smoke, making the air cleaner and safer to breathe.
  • Improved sleep: Cleaner air can improve the quality of sleep by reducing the presence of allergens and irritants in the air.
  • Protection from harmful viruses and bacteria: Some air purifiers are equipped with HEPA filters, which can remove 99.97% of airborne particles, including viruses and bacteria, from the air.
  • Enhanced comfort and well-being: By improving indoor air quality, air purifiers can enhance overall comfort and well-being, leading to a healthier living environment.

Health effects of inhaling microplastics?
The potential health effects of inhaling microplastics are still not fully understood and more research is needed to determine the extent and severity of the impact on human health. However, given the widespread presence of microplastics in the environment, it is important to take steps to reduce exposure and minimize their impact on health.

Reducing the use of plastic products and opting for alternatives, properly disposing of plastic waste to prevent it from breaking down into microplastics, and supporting research into the impact of microplastics on human health and the environment. By taking these steps, we can work to minimize the impact of microplastics on our health and the environment and create a cleaner, safer world for future generations. Plant-based packaging such as seaweed will be a great benefit when manufacturing and harvesting become easier with new technology that is currently being developed for mass use.
